Creating classrooms where teachers love to teach and students love to learn was the theme of an article I once studied while obtaining my Middle School Education degree. My personal philosophy of teaching is aligned with this sentiment. I have used the last 21 years of my profession to hone my desired outcome for the students that graduate out of my classes.
Fusing technical expertise, creativity and a capacity to connect with and invest in each of my students is how I like to set up their pathway to learn and achieve. Hopefully what I do in my classroom goes beyond just teaching math and fostering their best work. I desire to challenge and change their definition of “best” by empowering them to see math – and themselves – in a new way.
I’ve had the unique opportunity of being the sole Math 5-6 teacher on my campus working for Eanes ISD. Even though the 12 years at my previous middle school in Virginia was working on a large team, this most recent structure has given me more freedom to develop an exceptionally robust and exciting math curriculum. This role can now continue here at St. Stephen's, where it is my desire to lead my math classes with poise and personality, validating the study of math every day.
My classroom weaves technology, interactive experiences, fun contests and class participation in a way that hopefully keeps the students engaged and looking forward to the next lesson. I want my classroom climate to be lively and inviting – this room should be a safe environment to learn math with a sense of humor and balance, a place to feature problem solving applications, room to develop imaginations as well as foster progress with conceptual understanding.
By year’s end, I hope it will be clear that I have invested similarly in all of my students' growth, leveraging their strengths, particularly in the midst of adolescent changes and concerns. This is such a critical time in their lives. My unwavering commitment and enthusiasm to give my students the tools they need to succeed as students and citizens will hopefully shine through. In forming unique bonds with the parents of the children as well, it is my desire to create a partnership where we believe in and nurture them – seeing the unique potential in every individual as well as helping them see it and believe it for themselves.
